Cane Bay Cleanup update...
A few weeks ago I wrote of the successful trash pick up that was conducted with the help of the South Carolina Aquarium and volunteers from the Cane Bay neighborhoods.
Well, it was even more successful than we first thought!
After Linda Rowe had compiled all the results from the data that was collected by each group of volunteers, here's what she found:
191 volunteers picked up 8,145 pieces of trash varying size from a cigarette butt to several bicycles.
The predominant type of trash though was the landscape netting used when new sod is put down, as it is all over these neighborhoods, and it also seems to be the most destructive to wildlife.
Here's the note from Linda, and the table of her findings:
The blue highlighted neighborhoods indicate lots of landscape netting issues around ponds. The blue text indicate that pond areas were predominantly cleaned (as opposed to road sides). Interestingly, Jasmine Pt and West Lake volunteers didn’t find as much netting litter around their neighborhood ponds as all the others. The table below gives a big-picture summary and top 3 debris categories found.
So many thanks to all of you that participated in this massive project!
