Seeds to Shoreline...
This past Tuesday, Seeds to Shoreline offered an exciting volunteer opportunity for Master Naturalists at the College of Charleston greenhouse. The morning of February 17th was spent planting newly germinated Spartina seedlings. With guidance from Morgan Treon and Elle Pestorius, volunteers were educated on the proper technique for planting tiny Spartina alterniflora seedlings into their starter pots.
Seeds to Shoreline is a salt marsh restoration program designed for K–12 students and teachers. Participants in the program not only have a chance to learn about the importance of this critical coastal ecosystem, but they also actively help restore areas of salt marsh by planting Spartina.
An impressive total of 1,190 Spartina alterniflora seedlings were planted into starter pots, filling 14 trays. Once established in the pots, these new Spartina plants will be transplanted into designated areas along the South Carolina coastline.
