Purple Martin Gourd Raising at John's Island County Park...
On January 29th, CMNA members met at John’s County Island Park to begin a citizen science project on Purple Martins.
The park has installed a Purple Martin (or PUMA – acronym) at the park, and CMNA members will be waiting for a scout to show up and help migrating PUMA’s locate the nesting site.
If the nesting site is successful, the team will track the number of nests, eggs, chicks that hatch, and fledglings. There will also be an opportunity to band the birds.
The project is being led by Caroline Heape, our CMNA Interpretive Recreation Aide, Sarah Edwards, and Kristina Wheeler, Natural History Interpretation Specialist.
Look for more updates in the coming months!
