Edisto Beach Fossil Hunt...
Quite a crew arrived at Edisto Island beach for our Walk and Talk with paleontologist Ashby Gale!
We started with a little show and tell of what we should be looking for, and possibly find. Ashby shared that we should be looking for anything black, not grey, as fossils take on the prevailing colour of the substrate they're found in. In this case, phosphate, which the lowcountry is known for.
What could we find...all manner of things from megalodon teeth, to sabre tooth cat teeth, mammoth tusk, turtle shell and more!
Ashby also explained that during the Pleistocene Epoch, where we were standing was probably 50 miles from the actual beach, and so we were standing where there would have been a grassy savannah!
Next, it was off to the beach to see what we could find!
While I was not so lucky in my search...many were! Our events Chair, Nicky, had a collection which Ashby sifted through to find a piece of mammoth tusk...that piece on the upper left of her hand
and a piece of a tooth from a fossilized Spotted Eagle Ray!
Krisitna has been kind enough to share some of her photos, too...
After the hunt was over, Ashby was able to help people identify their finds
definitley some shark teeth in there...what else? If you know, post away and let us know :)
There were some amazing finds, and one of our most enjoyable outings!
