The Caw Caw Interpretive Center's garden gets an upgrade!
Caw Caw Interpretive Center and some Master Naturalist volunteers teamed up with Sharleen Johnson of Native Plants to the People LLC (NPTTP) to install pollinator specific native plants to the big garden near the Interpretive Center.
NPTTP is a native plant nursery and habitat garden consulting company based in James Island, South Carolina. NPTTP sight selected dozens of self-seeding annuals, perennials and a few shrubs that have strengths to combat the lower amount of sunlight and deer browse that this garden struggles with.
A few of the plants you will see on your next visit to Caw Caw include Scarlet Sage, Common Yarrow, Butterfly Milkweed, Green-and-Gold 'Pierre', Mouse-Eared Coreopsis , Great Blue Lobelia, Spotted Beebalm, Foxglove Beardtongue, Clustered Mountain Mint, Hoary Skullcap, Wild White Indigo, Stokes' Aster, Parsley Hawthorn, Swamp Titi and Arrowwood Viburnum. After a few weeks we are thrilled to report that every plant is looking very happy and a healthy in its new location.
Thanks to NPTTP for selecting native plants that are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions where they naturally occur. These important plant species provide nectar, pollen, and seeds that serve as food for native butterflies, insects, birds and other animals. Native plants help the environment in other ways too since they require much less watering, fertilizer, and pesticides. In fact, they can prevent water run-off and improve air quality. Native plants can also help decrease pollution because they eliminate the need for mowers and other equipment.
Less money, less maintenance and ALL THE BEAUTY. Win-WIN-WIN!
